Updates are likely to be sparse between now and June 6. We're currently in the Seattle area, getting ready to go on a cruise to Alaska. To see more about what we'll be doing, check out GeekCruises. Dori will be teaching JavaScript on the cruise; I just get to be the spouse tagging along for the ride.

So Dubya has now come

So Dubya has now come out for Star Wars-style missile defenses, while ducking (as usual) all of the details. Read more about it: Bush Backs Wider Missile Defenses.

I'd like to see if he has an answer for any of the issues raised in this and this articles from Slate, which debunk the whole stupid "rogue state" notion.

In answer to Dori's rhetorical

In answer to Dori's rhetorical question about Salon, as far as I can tell, they've made it impossible to get to any but the top story with only one click, forcing you to go deeper into their site (and these pages aren't especially lightweight, bandwidth-wise) to read stuff that interests you. I predict plummeting readership.

The Sierra Leone disaster led

The Sierra Leone disaster led me to this piece in the UK's Daily Telegraph, a decidedly non-PC opinion article arguing that most of Africa is a nightmare that will not improve by itself, and that band-aid relief from the West has been and will be ineffective. The author argues for structural intervention from without - breaking up countries where there is civil war - or even a kind of recolonialization. It also dispatches some of the fashionable social causes of the day, such as across-the-board debt relief:

Given that much of Africa's debt derives from its leaders' widespread habit of siphoning off public funds and funnelling them into their foreign bank accounts (Nigeria's late president, Sani Abacha, had more than $1.5 billion in such accounts and Zaire's Mobutu a multiple of that) it is not obvious why the West should forgive such theft by writing off the debt.

Interesting stuff.
