We've known Mike Farmer, publisher

We've known Mike Farmer, publisher of MacMoney, for many years. Through Cam, we found out that Mike's company, Survivor Software, has been getting lotsa hits by people who were trying to get info about some TV show.

C'mon, CBS, why don't you just give Mike a lot of money for the URL and include a link to his site?

Several years ago, I was involved in a venture that sold management software to garment manufacturers; it was the only Mac-based solution on the market, and we called it MacRag. I learned a lot about the garment business, certainly enough to be glad we never had any customers as misguided as this: The Dorcus Line of Menswear.

The always wonderful Joel on

The always wonderful Joel on Software says Whaddaya mean, you can't find programmers?. I've said this for a while; there's no shortage of programmers, there's just a shortage of companies willing to do what it takes to make programmers happy.

Dori's law of programmer availability: if I haven't been offered a job in the last 18 months, there's no shortage of programmers.

His article reminded me of one company I worked for that had a policy of no vacation in the first 12 months you worked there and not much after that. They offered me pretty good money to start, so I offered to take $5K less in exchange for an extra week's vacation every year. They turned it down. I should have turned them down.

For a long time, I've thought that Courtney Love was a self-absorbed, media-hungry asshole. But after reading this speech she delivered about the record business and new technology, I admit that I was wrong.

For those of you who

For those of you who saw my post of last Saturday, yes, the offending page has been taken down. The main site is still up though, sporting a disclaimer that says

A note to my students & other visitors: The purpose of this website is to bring the best of the best to your fingertips. As you go to the various sections, please note the disclaimers and the sources of the information being made available to you. Enjoy!!!
This is a woman who needs a sharp whack with the cluestick about a couple of things called copyright & plagiarism, imo. And this is a teacher... <sigh>. (Note: horrible "music" is automatically played if you follow the link).

Everything old is new again...

Everything old is new again... we were explaining to Sean about old time interactive fiction games, and how they were a big deal in the days before shoot-'em-up graphics games. A quick web search, and voila! Did you know that you can get IF games, not just for your desktop machine, but also for your Palm?

Start off by downloading ZIP (Z-Code Interpreter Program) and then grab one or all of the 90 public domain IF games. And if that's not enough, you can buy some of Infocom's classics online.

And of course, the classic Adventure is available online! I don't know how many hours I've wasted playing this over the years, but I just added another.
