Okay, I take back everything

Okay, I take back everything I said bad about UPS. They showed up at 4:40 pm, after we'd been told that they *never* deliver twice in one day. Whew!

Formerly the Captain James T. Kirk Singalong Site, ShatnerRocks.com has music clips (in Real format) from many of your fave Star Trek stars. Yes, it even includes a clip from Nimoy's infamous "Ballad of Bilbo Baggins." Lucky us.

Between now and the end

Between now and the end of the year, I'm doing a few sessions on creating UI's with DHTML. Navigation Voodoo has some great examples, although they don't work 100% in my browser of choice (IE5/Mac). Found on XBLOG: The visual thinking weblog.

I get a lot of spam from would-be headhunters, trying to convince me that I'm perfect for their entry-level HTML grunt jobs. I think that Magnum Solutions Ltd may be about the only company that hasn't offered me a position; odd, considering that I'm well qualified for several of the jobs listed on their page.

Disgusted by Bush and Gore?

Disgusted by Bush and Gore? Thinking about voting for Nader or Buchanan? This Slate article, Is Voting Rational? does an analysis of the effects of voting for candidates that can't win, as well as voting to "send a message."

If we're going to be

If we're going to be pissy, I did read much, though not all, of the report from last week. My take was that it consisted largely of dumb-ass politicians posturing for the cameras, again, 15 years ago. This included Al Gore. But frankly, posturing is what politicians do. Since I live in the real world, not the fantasy world inhabited by libertarians, I'm not shocked when they do it. And I understand that in the end, what counts with government is what it does, not the hot air. In the end, the government did nothing in response to the PMRC. Record companies decided that it was in their best interests to apply the "Offensive Lyrics" labels (yes, so that it would head off possible government action, but they saved themselves millions in legal fees for the price of the stickers, so it's a wash), and that's all that has happened.

Now, when I pointed to the Tipper piece yesterday, I was interested in the biographical sketch of the woman who may be the next First Lady, and it seemed like she was interesting and different from other politician's wives. She certainly doesn't appear to have that Stepford Wife attitude. When Dori needs to focus on 22 words out of a 4,500 word piece, it tells me that she's still more interested in burning the witch than attempting to understand the person.

Despite Tom not having read

Despite Tom not having read the report I linked to last week about Tipper Gore, I did read the one he linked to, below. Here's the relevant quote:

the infamous push for labeling obscene and violent rock lyrics that left her hammered although, in hindsight, looking like a cultural prophet.

Now, I did read the piece last week. And it said, explicitly, that the reason that kids needed to be protected from violent and obscene lyrics was because they were causing an increase in the crime rate.

Now, if you notice, what's happened since then? The lyrics have gotten more violent and obscene, while simultaneously, the youth crime rate has gone down. It ain't because of the PMRC, folks--it's because, very simply, the two are NOT connected.

"Cultural prophet", my ass.

Note to Dori: Perhaps Tipper

Note to Dori: Perhaps Tipper Gore isn't the devil, after all. She sounds like a pretty interesting person in this article. Maybe she just took on a cause that you disagree with, once.
