Yeah, I guess our 80-hour
Yeah, I guess our 80-hour ReplayTV is just a figment of our imaginations. But it's a darn nice figment. Good article, though. It's nice to see an article give a decent amount of space to ReplayTV, not just Tivo.
Folks, once you get a PVR (Personal Video Recorder) like ReplayTV or Tivo, it really changes the way you use and watch television. If we're watching something live (a more-and-more rare occurance), I get outraged that I can't hit the QuickSkip button and jump over the commercials. And when we're watching something like The West Wing with lots of quick, snappy dialogue, it's great to be able to jump back 6 seconds and hear things we missed the first time around. Plus, the ability to tell the box to record based on keywords lets us find all kinds of shows that we may otherwise have missed. It sounds like it's just a smarter VCR, but it's really something different, and much better.

I'm surprised that Tom didn't blog this story on hacking TiVos and ReplayTVs. Hey, Tom, did you know that you were one of less than a handful of technophiles who like tinkering?

From an email I got today from Amazon:
Dear Tom Negrino,Well, yeah, not to mention the music of Ani DeFranco and Catie Curtis, and books by Rita Mae Brown. It looks like I've been identified as part of Amazon's lesbian demographic. Just what I always wanted. Hell, I even wear sensible shoes.
We've noticed that many of our customers who've purchased CDs by Melissa Etheridge also enjoy the music of the Indigo Girls.
A shout out to our Oakland friend: send those flames privately, please.

"On Sunday night, Napster started filtering out copyrighted song names from its system. People have been proposing alternate ways of naming their music files so as to defeat such filtering, but no workable solution has emerged... until now! AIMster is offering a Pig Latin encoder that will encrypt your mp3 titles. They state that, under the DMCA, it would be illegal for the RIAA to reverse engineer their encoding scheme and try and filter the encrypted filenames from Napster. Beating the RIAA over the head with the DMCA is fun!"
Because I'm a Home Theater
Because I'm a Home Theater fan, I've got lots of remote controls. Sometimes it appears that they're actually breeding on the coffee table. Dori bought me a Sony RM-AV2000 universal remote a while back, which helps a lot, though I need to reprogram it now that we have the ReplayTV and the Dish Network satellite receiver. Imagine my joy at finding Remote Central, a site all about remote controls. If you're in the market for a universal remote that can replace your brood of remotes, check it out for reviews and programming tips.
