Oooh... Handeze has some new products out: the Handeze Plus comes with a hot or cold pack, and the standard fingerless glove now comes in all black. If you've ever suffered from RSI, you owe it to your hands and wrists to get these gloves.

Is there such a thing
Is there such a thing as coincidence?
This morning, Tom and I were talking about how we need to pick up some used books to take on our honeymoon, so that we can feel free to leave them on the road to minimize the amount of stuff we'll be carrying. And so long as we're there, we should drop off a bunch of books that we don't feel a need to keep.
This afternoon, jean sends me email telling me about BookCrossing.com. The easiest way to describe this is that it's to books like Where's George? is to dollar bills. Put your identifying info on your book, give it away somehow, and then track where it goes over time. Hmmm...

Zapato Productions intradimensional has an amazing collection of stuff. I've just looked at Aluminum Foil Deflector Beanie and the Free Cascadia Now! pages--wow. I'm sure that Belgium Doesn't Exist! and Black Helicopter Autopsy are just as wonderful. He says he's been "Serving the Paranoid since 1997" and I believe it.

Tranquility sounds like a pretty cool game. Supposedly, it has a calming euphoric effect. Too bad it requires a net connection, or I'd think about putting it on my laptop and taking it on the road (about the only time I ever play computer games). And Mac-only, for once!
It's a good thing that
It's a good thing that Tom was driving tonight as we drove past the 7-11, or we might have had an accident when I saw the sign announcing their newest product.
I dropped Tom off at home, circled back, and bought one. Life is good.

Jen Kitchen says to us: Here's my definition of a successful wedding: at the end of it, the bride and groom are a) married to one another and b) uninjured. Everything else is gravy.
I think that we can handle that much. I think. (Obviously, I'm not as sanguine about finishing up the to-do list as Tom is, but then, mine is longer.)

Wednesday am: Dave announces that he's hired John Robb as President and COO. His background: he worked for a search engine company no one ever heard of, and was "the senior Internet technology analyst for Forrester Research."
Wednesday pm: Joel flames Forrester, saying
I hate those cheesy market research companies who come up with ridiculous numbers and extrapolations (suitable for business plans) that make no sense, which, frankly, they pulled out of their tokhes. They always have these lame bar charts where they only have data for this year, then they extrapolate out four years assuming a typical 736.13% rate of growth, a number they divined by rolling dice and tossing bones about haphazardly.Other links of note: 1, 2, 3.

You read this weblog, so you're smart and talented, right? Therefore, you're just the people to ask for a favor...
I need a Java programmer to work with me on a short term, work for hire contract gig. The pay is moderate, and the work should be a walk in the park for someone who really knows their stuff. If this sounds like you (or someone you know), please contact me for more info.
It'd be the perfect job for someone who wants to make a few bucks while waiting for the economy to decide which way it's going...To say that "we're not
To say that "we're not even remotely ready for" the wedding would be more than a bit of a stretch, in my view. Everything major is done or near done. Sure, we still have a to-do list, but it's a bunch of minor stuff. No need to send the cavalry to help, folks.

Lots of people have asked, so here's the wedding registry info:
Yes, the wedding is in 19 days, and no, we're not even remotely ready for it. Thank you for asking.Dave Winer says that "writers
Dave Winer says that "writers who work for others have less integrity to offer than those who do it for love." So, I'll bite: what's the difference between this statement and saying "programmers who work for others have less integrity to offer than those who do it for love?" Isn't this exactly the point Dave objects to when he's getting grief from the open source community?
IMO, integrity and money have no relationship with each other. Lack of one doesn't imply the existence of the other, or vice versa. And there's really no reason why this statement should be true for writers and not programmers (speaking as someone who's been paid for doing both).
But hey, what I say doesn't mean anything, because by Dave's definition I have no integrity anyway.
The always excellent Joel on
The always excellent Joel on Software writes on Don't Let Architecture Astronauts Scare You. This is something I've been yelling about for years, so it's great to see someone else talking about it too.
Think about it: when was the last time that you said "Hey, I'm going to go buy a hammer today, 'cause I saw an ad for a neat new hammer." Nope, doesn't happen. What does happen is that you need to build something, and if the hammer you have doesn't do the trick, you go out and buy one that does. But the project always, always comes first, not the tool.
This is why I laughed at peer-to-peer, and push technology, and OpenDoc, and another dozen technologies. Real people rarely look at tools and say "Hey, I could build cool stuff with that, so I'lll buy it," they say "I want to build cool stuff--now, what's available that'll help me build it?"

There's a new Slashdot-style site up at MsGeek.org for (as you might guess from the name) geek women and those who like hanging out online with such. It's pretty recent so there's not a lot of content there, but it may be worth keeping an eye on.
