I always knew he was gonna be a star: The recent film The Score, starring Brando, DeNiro, and Edward Norton, was beautifully photographed by a friend, Rob Hahn. One Last Score, from American Cinematographer magazine, talks about how Rob did the job.

For those who've been following

For those who've been following the occasional health-related whining lately, here's the verdict.

Am I okay? Physically, yeah. The surgery got it all, and I go in tomorrow to get the stitches removed. Intellectually, I know that it's really minor as health-related issues go. Emotionally? Not so good. Coming right after my 40th birthday, I'm just feeling really damn old and fragile.

So if you've been wondering why I've been whizzing lately between silent and cranky, well, that's why. But thanks, everyone who sent me warm fuzzies after I said I had surgery last week. And remember, wear sunscreen.

Steve at Redmonk pointed to

Steve at Redmonk pointed to a good article entitled The Front Lines: How Job Interviews Really Work. One of the things I liked about it (even though it was depressing) was the honesty in the comments about how, if you're over 30, you're dead meat in the tech biz.

And to tie this in with the whole gender controversy that was raging a few days ago, here's a simple thought experiment for those in the tech biz. How old is the oldest male programmer you know (someone who's still actively writing code, although it doesn't have to be full-time). How old is the oldest female programmer you know? The results of that will tell you something about why there are more men than women in the biz.

The Devil in the details.

The Devil in the details. This article details why Bush's vaunted personal investment accounts won't work to save Social Security -- at least not without a big influx of federal funds to cover costs. And if you've been reading the news over the last few days, you know that those funds aren't available, because of the Bush tax cut.

I mentioned on Saturday that I knew someone who's looking for a little JavaScript contracting done. So far, I've gotten zero responses. If you're interested, let me know, otherwise, I'll assume that the economy is picking up.

Tara pointed to WokZilla today, which she described as "a searchable subject index of Chinese recipes." That sounded good, so I checked it out. When I saw that it also had categories for Japanese, Thai, and Vietnamese, I knew I had to blog it for Tom (hint, hint).

Am I. . . Registered

Am I. . . Registered to Vote or Not? is good news/bad news. It's good that people in NYC can tell online whether or not they're registered to vote. It's not so good that you can get info on anyone, so long as you know their last name and their birthdate.

And it's just plain wrong, Joelle, that they've got your name misspelled (hey, I needed to try it out, and your info was handy).

Yesterday, I said that "This

Yesterday, I said that "This won't change until women start writing to conference organizers and saying 'I'm not going to your show because I object to your practice of having [no women/only one token woman] on your list of speakers.'" Dave responded:

Why can't men write saying the same thing? Why does she only want help from women? What if a man offered to help?

That's a darn good question, so I thought about it for a while. What I came up with was this:

Have you ever seen a professional do-gooder type try to help out an individual or group that was perfectly happy with the status quo? Nothing positive ever results from this, in my experience.

So, my answer is, maybe most women aren't unhappy with the status quo. I don't know--I don't claim to represent anyone but myself.

So, I think that women, if they're unhappy, need to say that they're unhappy with the situation. If not, there's no problem. If they are, then hell, yeah, we need all the bodies we can get to make things better.

But I don't think that men need to go borrowing trouble on women's behalf if we aren't willing to speak up for ourselves first. After that, the more, the merrier.

BTW, I put yesterday's rant where it belongs, as a rant.
