Lately, we've been treated to
Lately, we've been treated to the sight of Ralph Nader's reemergence, still spewing the same lines he did after the election: there's no difference between the Dems and the GOP, he didn't make Gore lose, Gore lost because he wasn't liberal enough, more people would vote if there was a really progressive candidate, blah blah blah. This excellent analysis of the actual facts on the ground shows why Ralph's living in a dream world, and how his political strategy is likely to consolidate right-wing power, not lessen it. Read this if you voted for Nader last time, and if you haven't yet repented.
I spent part of yesterday
I spent part of yesterday at Web 2001 (hey, that's me!). All I can say is, I hope that there were lots of people attending the classes, because the exhibit floor was dead. Really dead. Almost no exhibitors and even fewer attendees.
The best example I saw to describe the show was the "Cool Site in a Day Contest." Well, except this year, it's not a contest. They couldn't get anyone to volunteer to be on teams, I was told, so they tried to get Adobe and Macromedia to compete. Even that would have been cool... except Macromedia backed out. So, what previously was an exciting competition was now just watching some folks that Adobe sponsored working on a web site--nothing competitive or even exciting about it.
The energy level in the exhibit hall felt like I was at a wake. R.I.P., New Economy.

Mac Mania now has a home page! Yeah, I know it doesn't list us, but we'll be there, along with a number of other cool people who aren't listed yet either.

Many months ago, I blogged the Boogie Bass Hack. Now, to top that, there's The Hacking Big Mouth Billy Bass in Linux Project. Some things are just wrong.

Molecules with Silly or Unusual Names are so silly, I can't even think of anything worth adding.

Steve Champeon offers a reminder that this Saturday is when Unix time tops a billion. Sounds to me like an excuse to bring my laptop to Fray Day.
Today, the Moose says to
Today, the Moose says to invest in Winnebago, 'cause with the downturn in the economy people will be doing camping vacations. My experience differs; I think that if you're doing that kind of investing, go with Carnival Corporation (yes, they really do own all those cruise lines). As the boomers age, they'll want softer vacations, and this company offers trips for every price range.
Hmmm... it may be time for me to go buy some stock.

From the Chicago Tribune: "[U]nlike other former veeps, there's no bust of [Dan] Quayle on display in the U.S. Capitol. That's because the artists signed up to work on the Quayle likeness keep dying." Of boredom, perhaps.
Salon has a memorial tribute
Salon has a memorial tribute to Pauline Kael.
She cultivated an aura of toughness, partly because she couldn't help it (she didn't suffer fools gladly) and partly because to her, being smart was just plain fun -- it never occurred to her that anyone should find it otherwise. Intelligence wasn't a burden; it wasn't even a grand gift. It was a toy to be enjoyed and played with daily.
Hey, if when I go, anything remotely like this could be said about me, I'll be satisfied.

Where we'll be this week:
Thursday, we'll be at Web 2001, where we'll be signing books at the Peachpit booth from 3-4 pm. Before that, we'll be wandering aimlessly about.
Saturday, I (Dori) will be at Fray Day 5 SF. I enjoyed last year (even though I ranted about it) and I'm looking forward to going again.
If you're going to be at either of these events, or even if you're just in town and want to get together, let us know.

Dunno about other writers, but for us, this was a major achievement.

I have entered a select group: owners of the Global 8" chef's knife. It's heavenly. I have a Henckels 8" chef's, but it's no contest. I'd say more, but the redoubtable Al Hawkins said it first and better.
