As several people have noted

As several people have noted (and if memory serves me correctly), the SXSW Iron Webmaster Showdown is now taking entries for teams. Hey, if anyone needs a JavaScript/DHTML geekette on their team, let me know--I'd love to go to SXSW. Allez Geeking!

Found on the excellent InstaPundit.Com:

Question: if a woman dies a "martyr" do 72 male virgins also service her? Is this any kind of reward: clumsy teenagers pawing you for all of eternity while they ineptly try to figure out how to make things "come together?" No wonder only the men blow themselves up!
Sometimes InstaPundit is a bit too right-wing for me (he's also a columnist for Fox News), but there's almost always something interesting there.

As Dori remarked about the

As Dori remarked about the proposed Microsoft settlement, once the Republicans are bought with campaign contributions, they stay bought. It's a reassuring beacon of stability in an uncertain world, isn't it? Ill Legislation details how the GOP stays bought, down to the smallest details in the so-called "stimulus" plan the House passed a couple of weeks ago.

Yesterday, CA Governor Gray Davis

Yesterday, CA Governor Gray Davis announced that he had received information that there might be a terrorist threat to CA bridges. The FBI objected (though Davis' statement was based in part on their warning), saying the threat was too vague. Earlier this week, the Attorney General issued a widely criticized statement warning of unspecified terrorist threats. So what the Feds seem to be saying is "Our vague, uncorroborated threats are better than your vague, uncorroborated threats."

Remember that earlier this year, the Shrubsters were attacking Davis for not reacting to the threat of power shortages faster. Had something bad happened, and Davis not issued the warning, what do you think that Karl Rove and the rest of the GOP attack dogs would be doing before next year's elections?

Netscape 6.2 is out! The

Netscape 6.2 is out! The good news: it supports OS X. The bad news: on OS X, it still doesn't support Java applets.

That bad news is, of course, only a problem if you're in the middle of trying to write a book on Java 2 applets that includes OS X coverage. Or, in other words, if you're me. So that means on the Mac side, it's IE 5.1 only. Bummer.

Yeah, the NN 6.2 documentation says it supports Java on OS X. But if I have applets that run just fine on Netscape 6.1/Win, Netscape 4.x/Win, IE6.0/Win, and IE 5.1/Mac, and they don't run on Netscape 6.2/Mac, well, I know where I tend to lay the blame.

Doc Searls just got back

Doc Searls just got back from the Linux Lunacy Geek Cruise, and is reporting back. "...limitless food, swimming, and first-rate hang time with some very interesting folks all equally liberated from their daily datagrind." Yup, that's a good description, or just the start of one.

We've been on two Geek Cruises, and had a blast on them both. Next up for us: Mac Mania, leaving Memorial Day 2002. I've seen the full brochure; it's a trip worth going on.

It's getting on to that

It's getting on to that time of year, so I recently realized that, for the first time ever, it doesn't look like I'll be celebrating Thanksgiving with my family. I've always either gone to my mother's or my aunt's (okay, once to my younger brother's) house, but I've never, ever had to do a dinner at home. Ordering out from the Oakville Grocery sounds like one not-too-shabby possibility.

This excellent article says that

This excellent article says that our "leaders" should suck it up and start acting as if they deserved the title. I don't know anyone who's panicked about anthrax; do you? But the media and politicians can't put it in perspective. Sure, it's bad that three people have died from this, and 10 more are sick. But in the same two weeks, something like 90,000 Americans are dead from all causes. It's time for the commentariat to get a grip.
