Oh, this is amazing: catalogs.google.com. Darn near every catalog in the world, scanned and searchable via Google. The search engine here is (unsurprisingly) better than some of the ones on the retailer's own sites, so I'll be coming here first to look for anything. Time to throw out all those catalogs I've got lying around.

The December Wired has an article on The Geek Syndrome, which covers Autism and Asperger's Syndrome. I found the accompanying AQ (Autism Quotient) Test to be particularly interesting. BTW, yes, I took it, yes, I answered honestly, and yes, I agree with the resulting score--but that doesn't mean I'm telling anyone here what it was.

If you take a look at the list of Confirmed Speakers for SXSW 2002, it includes me! Yay me!
There's a lot of very cool people on that list. Those I've met before I'm looking forward to seeing again. Others, I'm looking forward to seeing again for the first time.

Vanilla Sky isn't getting particularly great reviews. There's a funny line from the one in Slate:
I can think of many words to describe the notion of going to bed with Penelope Cruz and waking up with Cameron Diaz, but "nightmare" isn't one of them.
Macworld Expo announced today that
Macworld Expo announced today that Steve Jobs's keynote, previously scheduled for Tuesday January 8, will now be Monday, January 7. Tom's guess: it got moved up a day so that Steve can hit CES, which is January 8-11. That wouldn't surprise me a bit, although it is a drag that, due to the change, I'll be missing my first Macworld keynote in years.
Both the word geek and
Both the word geek and SF geek parts of me think that this is way cool. Science Fiction Citations for the OED: Hunting for the earliest citations of sf words. I wish our books were better organized; it wouldn't surprise me at all if we had a reference or two that they're looking for.

Dori's often referred to stuff on the Food Network as "food porn." She's right. For sex...er...food toys, there's Good Eats, where Alton Brown, the slightly demented-looking host, shows you cool gadgets and how to use them. He also goes into the science behind the food; it's like Food Tantra. Who would be surprised to find out that Alton approaches his love life with the same sense of discovery? If you're interested in kinky foreign food with a competitive edge, you have Iron Chef. And if you're not the adventurous type, there's always the food equivalent of the missionary position, From Martha's Kitchen, with Martha Stewart. Today I saw Gastro-Porn, an article in Slate about the phenomenon. The meme is spreading.

MacOSX.org: MacOSX Web Browser Shoot Out 2002. Given that they said the same thing as Tom has in his Macworld browser reviews (here and here, for example), how long before the idiots start claiming that MacOSX.org's on the Microsoft payroll?

Check out Partnership For an Idiot-Free Internet. The cool thing is, they're serious. I'll be referring a few people to them (none of you readers, of course--you're all brilliant and beautiful).
