I'm working to music streaming

I'm working to music streaming from Live 365, which has zillions of different streams from which to choose. I wanted to expand the choices I'd been listening to, so I did some browsing and ran across a channel called "Folk Rock Streams." They're playing something I thought I'd never hear again: "A Song for All Seasons," by the progressive rock band Renaissance. I actually owned and liked this album back in 1978. Hearing it again really makes me appreciate the power of mind-altering substances. What was I thinking?

A note for those who

A note for those who were confused by the previous entry: the Mac shows a floppy disk with a blinking question mark if it can't boot off the hard drive. It's an ancient relic of a time when, if you didn't have a working hard drive, you were asked to boot off a floppy. Apple hasn't shipped a Mac in years that can boot off a floppy, but the icon hasn't changed, and it still means that your hard drive is toast.

You ever have one of

You ever have one of those nightmares where you're on your way to an important client, and the laptop with every bit of data that client needs dies? Yeah? You ever have the one where it happens at 35,000 feet?

Now you know what yesterday was like.

Okay, it didn't actually die, it just gave me a flashing question mark on a floppy. Thankfully (not luckily--luck had nothing to do with it), I had all my important OS CDs with me. The hardware diagnostic CD said that the disk was fine. Disk Utility from the OS X CD said that the disk was fine. Disk First Aid from the OS 9 CD (yeah, the CD I *almost* didn't bring along--why would I need an OS 9 CD, after all?) was able to fix the Master Directory Block problem.

I'd like to know why I've had to run diagnostic repairs on this TiBook more times in the 5 weeks I've had it than I've ever had to do in the two years I've had my G4 tower. Is it OS X-related, or is this particular machine just a lemon?

Let's just say that the words "Next time, Dell" went through my mind a few times.

And the bag of peanuts exploding when I opened it and going everywhere didn't cheer me up any, either.

Jean pointed me towards this

Jean pointed me towards this article: Curry "may slow Alzheimer's". So, more turmeric and more booze in my diet, and I should be safe.

Several people have linked to this page on JavaScript Optimization. I did a session on "Accelerating your JavaScript" at Builder.com in 2000; I should probably put it online at some point. Overall, while Jeff's stuff looks good, he's missing some important speed tips, such as never, ever, using with.

A number of people have linked to the article Is human evolution finally over? with approving comments. I looked at it and saw obvious contradictions within the article itself. The most obvious one, imo, is a complete disregard for the concept of hybrid vigor.

Buying drugs finances terrorism? Give

Buying drugs finances terrorism? Give me a break. It would have been more accurate to say that filling up your SUV (i.e., sending money to the Saudis) finances terrorism. But you won't hear that from this administration.

This may fall into the

This may fall into the Too Much Information category, but we hate the toilets that came with our home. After only two years, we're ready to rip them out and have them replaced with units that actually work without the help of multiple flushes or plungers. They're cheap Mansfield Altos (you have been warned!). So after having to fix Sean's toilet again this morning, Dori and I decided to go ahead and buy new toilets for the two bathrooms in the house.

Of course, the place to turn for research is the Web, right? After just a bit of Googling, I found a toilet geek site: Terry Love's consumer toilet reports. He's a plumber in Washington state who rates which toilets work as they should. One of his top-rated units is the Gerber Ultra Flush, which was highest rated by Consumer Reports. But as always happens when researching stuff with Google, you end up in odd places.
