Googlefight!
Googlefight! This site lets you put in two words or phrases, and see which shows up more frequently in Google. In the competition between whether we're "Tom and Dori" or "Dori and Tom," the latter wins by 155 to 123. So I win! But I would have guessed it'd be the other way around.Single payer heathcare - it's back
The Single Guy, from The New Republic, discusses the trial balloon that Al Gore has been floating as he returns to the political fray, namely single-payer healthcare. I'm for it; my lovely bride isn't. It will be interesting to see if Gore has developed good comebacks to the right's inevitable shrill cries of "It's socialism!"NetNewsWire Lite 1.0.2
NetNewsWire Lite 1.0.2 is out. Yes, I finally broke down and started using an RSS reader, and yes, I like it. Okay, already?Mac ninja
Mac ninja. Hee.The manufacture of dissen
Interesting blog post by Charlie Stross, an up-and-coming SF writer and netizen about the manufacture of artificial dissent, his comments about how the news is being reported on both sides of the Atlantic, in each place having the effect of making the other place look bad.Big Lights in Sky
Saw the Big Lights in Sky last night. Pretty cool, including at least two meteors that left smoky trails. I sure wish the Moon hadn't been so full; there were a bunch of meteors that were barely visible, and if it had only been darker I'm sure it would have been spectacular. See more or less what I saw at the 2002 Leonids Meteor Gallery.Cool (and not-so-cool) Tools
Here's a little preview of my session tomorrow (Tuesday) on WYSIWYG Web tools, along with a blast from the past:
| December 2000 Tool Shootout | Macromedia Dreamweaver 3 | Adobe GoLive 5 | Microsoft FrontPage 2000 | Hand-coding |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lines | 41 | 132 | 640 | 28 |
| Characters | 1,468 | 4,139 | 14,654 | 783 |
| Good Javascript? | No | No | No | Yes |
| W3C valid HTML? | No | No | No | Yes |
| November 2002 Tool Shootout | Macromedia Dreamweaver MX | Adobe GoLive 6 | Microsoft FrontPage 2002 | Hand-coding |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lines | 49 | 55 | 730 | 29 |
| Characters | 1,773 | 1,453 | 16,380 | 858 |
| Good Javascript? | No | No | No | Yes |
| W3C valid XHTML? | Yes | No | No | Yes |
The goal was to produce a simple Web page containing just a single linked image that rolled over to another image. The only big surprise for me was the way that Adobe GoLive dropped its code bloat--it's a only about a third of what it used to be. And no, my hand-coding hasn't gotten worse; that's just the difference between writing an HTML-compliant page vs. an XHTML-compliant page.
And so it begins
I'm here at Web Design World, and I just ran into Sandee Cohen. While comparing geek toys, she recommended stuff from RadTech.us. Cool stuff. Honey, do we need a T-8 Torx wrench?Know any good short movies?
Screen brightness was set to next to the lowest setting and Airport was off, btw.
Actual battery life from this point: 90 minutes. Or in other words, 30 minutes too short to finish the movie I was watching on the plane to Boston. Time to go looking for a 2nd battery, I think. Or some really short movies.
Grr Arrgh
I've had days like this, too.Who's linking to us?
We're not A-list bloggers (by a long shot), so we're just now getting hit by referral log spam. Oh joy.All entries © 1999-2008 Tom Negrino and Dori Smith
