Surfin' Safari
For my own future reference: Surfin' Safari is a blog by one of the Safari developers. I'm going to have to find a contact there and this guy sounds like he might be the one I need. Basically, someone needs to (1) document what Safari does/doesn't support in the way of JavaScript (and how to make your pages work with all standards-compliant browsers) and (2) why a browser that doesn't support bookmarklets (aka favelets) is, imo, not even worth considering. Please, please, please, Apple, add bookmarklets! Please?Entourage sold separately
Good news from Macworld Expo: The excellent Microsoft Entourage X mail and PIM program has been unbundled from Office v. X and will now be sold for $99. It's what we use, and I'm glad that it will be available to people who don't want to purchase Office. Maybe it will help sell some more books. I think the extension of the Office promotion with Apple will be good for book sales, too.Down boy, down!
No, Tom, you can't have it.Do you speak Russian?
If you speak Russian, could you tell me what it says on this page? It's very weird seeing my name and this weblog mentioned on a page that's otherwise all in Russian.Expo Predictions
Expo Predictions, part 1: Here's what I said, one year ago today. Now I think that it's even more likely, but this time with 802.11g.
Expo Non-predictions, part 1: it ain't gonna be a video iPod.
Expo Predictions, part 2: It may or may not be an iPod 2, but it'll have some or all of:
- iPod Phone: this device plugs into the FW and headphone jacks of an iPod, with room for a Bluetooth adaptor, antenna, and cellphone SIM. Actual audio is handled by the Bluetooth earpiece. Includes a passthrough for the headphone jack so that the user can listen to music through headphones when the phone isn't in use. Optional accessory: Bluetooth SMS keyboard.
- iPod Mic: this device plus into the FW port, and allows a user to record mono audio on the iPod's hard drive. Geared towards college students who want to record class lectures.
- iPod Radio: so long as you're doing the previous, this is an easy one. It plugs into the FW and headphone jacks. FM only.
- iPod Camera: plugs into the FW port. Takes color pictures, but you can only see them in B&W on the iPod screen. The phone can send them to people (unlike MP3's, which you won't be able to mail).
Expo Non-predictions, part 2: We won't see G5 machines yet, and certainly not OS X on x86. No tablet, either. Yet.
Expo Predictions, part 3: Definitely double-speed FireWire (yeah, okay, that's a gimmee), and maybe USB 2. And possibly something having to do with Web conferencing.
Past history has me getting 0% on my predictions, and 100% on my non-predictions. Wish me luck!
We're in San Francisco all week for Macworld Expo. If you see us at the show, be sure to say hello! The best time to find us is on Tuesday at 2 PM, when I do a book signing at Peachpit Press (Booth 2023); Wednesday at 11 AM, when we sign our JavaScript book at the same booth; and Thursday at 5PM, when we're both speaking in the User Group Lounge (Room 250/265) on a topic that we have yet to figure out. We're also appearing on the Online Tonight radio show, broadcasting from their booth (3527) on the Expo show floor on Friday, at 2:30.
