The view from Tom's office

If you've ever seen the view from Tom's office, you might have thought how nice it was that we've got that lovely mostly undeveloped land right next to us. The bad news is, it won't be undeveloped forever. Here's the latest on the development plans.

Kvelling

I've been slacking on the parental bragging lately, so it's time for me to congratulate Sean on being accepted at a great summer program. He'll spend the first part of the summer studying Genetics, and the second part Probability and Game Theory. Pretty cool, huh?

Periodic Table of Dessert

Another link that's just because we're about to leave on the cruise: The Periodic Table of Dessert.

Spammers must die

Over on the right hand side, I have a "contact" link to email me. I change that address periodically, because even though it's encoded, it's still susceptible to spammers (although the encoding is supposed to help).

I last changed it on May 20th. I got my first piece of spam at the new address today.

Have I mentioned recently how much I hate spammers?

Dean Meetup

Dean Meetup If all the talk on this blog has gotten you interested in what Howard Dean has to say, consider going to your local Dean 2004 Meetup event on Wednesday, June 4.

Unfortunately, we can't make it to this one, because we'll be visiting the Republic of Kiribati that day, as part of our Hawaii trip. Everyone say, "Awww..."

Note for trivia buffs: although Fanning Island (the part of Kiribati we'll be visiting) is on this side of the International Date Line, the entire Republic uses a common time zone that puts them on the other side (GMT+12). Consequently, we actually won't be able to make the Wednesday Meetup, because we won't have a Wednesday next week—just two Thursdays.

iTunes 4.0.1 warning

A Public Service Notice to our readers: if you download iTunes 4.0.1, you won't be able to share music across the net anymore, only across a local subnet. And even worse, "iTunes 4.0.1 is required to share music with other iTunes 4.0.1 users." Just say no.

Commercial or Non?

Shirley Kaiser posted an interesting rant: Commercial or Non-commercial Weblog: Which is it, and Why Does it Matter? In it, she describes how her blog was recently turned down for inclusion at a site due to its "commercial" nature, and how she'd never thought of it as a commercial site. In her musings, she mentions this site as one of the ones that she thinks of as straddling the line between commercial and non.

Personally, I've read her blog as long as she's had one, and I've always thought of it as commercial. Not for any of the reasons that she mentions, but solely because of the content. I know Shirley, and she's interested in lots of things (hint: check out her music), but her blog is 90%+ about Web design. As such, I have to assume that it's affiliated with and related to her Web design business.

Whenever a single person site has "Contact Us" and "About Us" areas, I assume that they're trying to grow to be a larger entity. I took it for granted that she wanted to make B&R another Digital Web or A List Apart—an honorable endeavor, imo. But commercial? Definitely.

Us? Yeah, we've got a few links over on the right hand side (which we've already been told no one ever looks at <g>), but they're not the focus of this site. And in using a URL that's unrelated to any of our commercial work, we've specifically tried to keep this site personal, not professional.

But that's just my take on this. If you have an opinion, put it in the comments.
