Daily Howler on Dean on MtP

In Are hopefuls judged by a single standard? When Russert fought Dean, we weren't sure, Bob Somerby of the Daily Howler compares and contrasts Tim Russert's questioning of Howard Dean vs. his 1999 questioning of George Bush. While the initial questions may have been similar, the responses were very, very different.

Older Adult Blogs

You find the damndest things when you look through your site logs. For instance, this page (from Tom's alma mater, SDSU) refers to this site as an example of a blog by "Older Adult[s]." Oh dear.

Us for Dean for America

Now that Howard Dean has officially annouced that he's running for President, we probably ought to officially announce that we're endorsing him. Thankfully, Lynn over at Medley did an excellent writeup of why she's endorsing Dean, so I'll just point there and say "Me too!", instead of having to write it myself.

How long have I been saying on this blog that I want a candidate that's socially liberal and fiscally conservative? It's about damn time, in my opinion.

And yes, we have read Joe Klein's piece on Dean. It starts off:

I want a balanced budget," Howard Dean said, and the crowd at the Larkspur Ferry Terminal roared. "Imagine that!" Dean continued with a smile. "Here we are in Marin County, the last bastion of liberalism, hooting and hollering for a balanced budget." But the crowd wasn't really cheering for balanced books; it was hooting and hollering for Dean himself, who could come out foursquare for a healthy balanced diet and his supporters would find it deliriously rebellious.

I dunno if Joe Klein was actually there in Larkspur, but we were, and one of the reasons that I was "hooting and hollering" in response was that Dean is the only candidate, from any party, who's in favor of us living within our means. I'm still trying to figure out why that makes him the "liberal" candidate (or that's what he's being called by the "liberal" media, at least).

Use an accordian, go to Cotati

Tom always gripes about how he doesn't hear about this until it's too late, so I'm reminding him now of the Cotati Accordion Festival, August 23-24. And yes, Tom, your faves Those Darn Accordions will be there.

New towers, but no joy

Apple made their announcements, but there's no news of a refresh for their 15" PowerBook, the machine I want to buy now. Sigh. Based on the new towers and the 12" and 17" AlBooks, the 15" TiBook is starting to look a little old and out-of-date. Well, as soon as Apple announces an update, I'll be figuring out how it fits in the budget.

And oh, yeah, they announced lots of other cool stuff but it's really all about me, right?

Keynote VQS available

Keynote VQSHarry Potter isn't the only book that shipped this weekend. Amazon now shows Keynote for Mac OS X: Visual QuickStart Guide (author, Tom Negrino) as shipping within 24 hours. The bad news: for some reason, they think that it has some unusual weight or size, so they're currently adding a shipping surcharge. Wait a few days; this should be straightened out soon.
