Who Will Win the 2004 U.S. Presidential Election?

Scientists of all sorts love to come up with convoluted calculations that they think will predict the future. In this case, this guy thinks he can predict Who Will Win the 2004 U.S. Presidential Election? His take: Dean or Clark could beat Bush. Can't say as I disagree with him, as my personal preference is for a Dean/Clark ticket.

Style Switchers done right

Shirley Kaiser is working on a redesign of her blog, partly described here. In it, she says

I'm also using scripts discussed in [Jeffrey Zeldman's Designing With Web Standards], such as Paul Snowden's Styleswitcher JavaScript to change font sizes

No!!! Don't do it!!!

Or at least don't do it, if that's the same style switcher JavaScript that's used at ALA and Jeffrey Zeldman's site. Why not? Because they don't work with Safari, because there's a bug in the JS code that switcher uses to handle cookies.

Want a switcher that works with (so far as I've been able to tell) all browsers? Feel free to borrow ours. And if you have a problems with ours, please let me know!

D'oh!

Dori: I just got off the phone with Apple. The bad news is that yeah, as expected, my Firewire port appears to be fried. The good news is that I'm still covered by AppleCare, and I just need to wait for them to ship me a box, turn it back around to them, and then wait 3-5 business days.

Tom: You'll want to make sure that you take a backup before you send it in.

Dori: Oh definitely—I was going to bring it home and do that this weekend.

Tom: Why bother bringing it home? You could just back it all up to that new 40 Gb pocket FW drive that you bought at the show last week.

Dori: (long silence)

Tom: Oh, yeah. That's the problem that you're sending it in for...
