Hating Bush - It's perfectly reasonable!
Wondering why people hate Bush? Yes, I'm one of them; I can't even stand to see him on TV. Here's why, in an excellent article that pretty much sums up all of the reasons. No, it's not a pathology - hating Bush turns out to be perfectly reasonable. Update: This is a subscription article, but you can get a free 4-week trial subscription.TiBook for sale
I've gotten a few requests for more info about selling my current laptop, so I figured I'd put the info here and just answer everyone at once.
- PowerBook G4 667 MHz (aka TiBook, aka "PowerBook G4 (Gigabit Ethernet)")
- 512 Mb RAM
- 20 Gb HD
- Combo drive (reads DVDs, reads and writes CDs)
- 16 Mb video RAM
- Outputs: VGA, 2 USB, 1 Firewire, stereo, IrDA, S-video, 10/100/1000 Ethernet, composite video, 56K modem
The machine is 21 months old, but the motherboard, bottom case, top case, and screen were all just replaced via AppleCare, so it looks like it just came out of the box. Also available: matching BookEndz dock.
Interested? Check out what comparable machines are going for on eBay and make me an offer.
Google 0wnz Us
If you search Google for Tom Negrino, you'll find that both Alibris and Barnes and Noble have bought Tom's name as a sponsored link.
If you search Google for Dori Smith, you'll find that both Alibris and Half.com have bought my name as a sponsored link.
Harrumph. How did Tom end up at B&N, but I ended up on the half-off table? At least Alibris treats both of us as equals.
Clark's in...so what?
ABCNEWS.com's The Note on Wesley Clark's entry into the Democratic race for the nomination:
Wes Clark will not blow the current field of 9 (now 10) candidates away.(and we could go on...).
- He has raised no money;
- He has no organization in Iowa, New Hampshire, and other early states;
- He isn't well known;
- He is immensely naive about the rhythms and mechanics of politics;
- He has made enemies among both the career and political people at the Pentagon (wait until you read those stories!);
- He has no obvious positions on many important (and hot-button) domestic issues;
- He exists on videotape at the Republican National Committee saying all sorts of (outrageous to some ears) things about the war;
- He is not a world-class public speaker;
- He has some of the less attractive traits of Ross Perot;
I see no reason to reconsider my support of Dean. Clark is like a blank screen upon which people are projecting their hopes for the perfect candidate. But hell, the guy didn't even bother to say that he was a Democrat until a few weeks ago. I watched him do it on CNN, and it wasn't exactly a clarion call for the Dems. I think that once Clark starts hitting the real world of politics, he may just hit the wall. We'll see a few weeks of furor and "what does this mean for the other candidates" pieces, and then he'll begin to stand or fall on his own merits.
The gender genie
Check out The Gender Genie, which purports to take text that you've written and analyze it to predict the gender of the author. I ran a bunch of the Backup Brain posts through it, and it's right most of the time, correctly figuring out which posts were mine and which Dori's. Fun stuff. Via Paul Music.Gettin' a new PowerBook
So, it's time to figure out how my predictions from last week held up:
| Powerbook | Want | Get |
|---|---|---|
| Chip | 1.25 GHz G4 | 1.25 GHz G4 |
| VRAM | 64 Mb | 64 Mb |
| Bus Speed | 167 MHz | 167 MHz |
| USB | 2 x 2.0 | 2 x 2.0 |
| Hard drive | 60 Gb | 80 Gb |
| Firewire | 400/800 | 1 400, 1 800 |
| Screen Size | 15.2", 1280x854 | 15.2", 1280x854 |
| Casing | Aluminum | Aluminum |
| Backlit keyboard | Yes | Yes |
| Video out | DVI | DVI |
| Wi-Fi | Airport Extreme | Airport Extreme |
| BlueTooth | Internal | Internal |
| Cache | 256 Kb Level 2 + 1 Mb Level 3 | 512 Kb Level 2 |
| Optical Drive | Super Drive | Super Drive |
So, the only place I really blew it was the level 3 cache. Not too bad! The only real question now is, how long will it take for mine to be delivered?
Oh, and as Tom mentioned, yes, I have a very clean TiBook for sale (description in last week's entry). Apple completely replaced the case and screen during the recent repair cycle, so it looks like it just came out of the box. And the TiBook dock, too, of course. And hey, I might sell my old Pismo while I'm at it, so make me an offer for one or all—please?
Wanna buy a TiBook?
I'm sure that Dori will weigh in here later, but now that Apple's finally announced the new 15" PowerBook, there's going to be a very clean TiBook for sale.iPod parodies

An old buddy of ours, David Morgenstern (no, not that David Morgenstern — this David Morgenstern) has, since, 1992, produced a monthly newsletter called JOHO (no, not that JOHO — this JOHO). Anyhow, all eleven years worth are now online (although in .doc format, unfortunately) and well worth checking out via that last link."I Hate Republicans"
Eric Blumrich hates Republicans (requires Flash).Love the sinner
Love the sinner, hate the sin: I'm doing some late-night blog surfing, and you know what? I just hate it when blogs use black backgrounds and white text. My old eyes freak out. Maddeningly, some of them are blogs that I don't want to stop reading. I'm looking at you, Mr. Moltz. I wish these folks would add a stylesheet option that reverses things to the usual black on white.All entries © 1999-2010 Backup Brain, LLC
