Blanco wins
And the winner in Louisiana is Kathleen Blanco. What's most interesting about this to me is that it immediately puts Mary Landrieu in the running for the Democrat's VP slot. I can think of lots of worse combinations than Dean/Landrieu.Brokered Dem Convention?
I've been predicting for months now, privately, that there's a good chance that the Democrats will have a brokered convention next year. Tom thinks it's unlikely. This Daily Kos thread examines some of the reasons why it's well within the realm of possibility. (Via Value Judgment)Silicon Pines
The toughest decision: should my loved one be placed in an assisted computing facility? Thankfully, Silicon Pines is here to help.Validation Bookmarklets
These validation bookmarklets appear to work darn near everywhere but Safari. Drat it. I should probably offer them my help to Safari-ize them.Presidential Homepage Shootout
I've been hoping that someone would do this: Presidential Homepage Shootout Targets Speed and Accessibility. This article takes a quick look at the home pages of Bush and the nine Democratic candidates, resulting in the not-terribly-surprising call that all of them fall down in terms of size and accessibility.
The one place where the writer didn't follow through (unfortunately) was in making it clear whether Bush's site actually breaks the law—as the incumbent, is his site required to follow Section 508 guidelines? This is an aspect of campaign and federal law that, to the best of my knowledge, hasn't been clarified yet. Anyone up for suing him to find out?
Access Healdsburg is a go
Congratulations to Access Healdsburg Community TV on their first day on the air! It's great to see what's come of the over two years hard work.Am I a Bush-Hater?
Could you call me a Bush-hater? Well, yes, I guess you could. And if you don't understand why, Molly Ivins sums it all up.Secret Santa
It's Secret Santa time again. Go sign up now, and you might get to buy me a gift (lucky you!). I've been a part of this one for at least a couple of years now, and it's been both fun and dependable. (Thanks to Meryl for reminding me it's that time of the year again)Contribute 2 and Panther
Doing Tom's job for him.... here's what to do when Macromedia Contribute 2 will not launch on Macintosh OS X 10.3 (Panther). That's two Panther problems down.Where Kerry went wrong
This is a quote from Charlie Cook's "Off to the Races," a free weekly email newsletter that I recommend to you:Think about Kerry's career. He came back from combat duty in Vietnam, testified against the war before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and later became a leader in Vietnam Veterans Against the War. Once elected to the Senate, Kerry seemed to get himself into virtually every liberal cause that came through the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. If there were three Democrats in the Senate that one might guess would be opposed to the war in Iraq, Kerry would be one of them. In voting for Iraq resolution, Kerry voted against everything he had ever represented and effectively cut himself off from his own base...These Democrats saw many of their party's leaders "abandon them" and sought out the most visible opponent of the war they could find, and they had to look hard before they found Dean.Basically, Kerry lost the race before it started, when he voted to give Bush the blank check for war. Talk about friendly fire!
Panther FTP problems
Here's a support request, thrown out to the 'net on the off chance someone will read this and have an idea of what my problem is. Basically, since upgrading to Panther 10.3, I can't FTP via any app. FTP via the command line works fine, but no applications (such as BBEdit) in which I've traditionally done FTP-like things work any more. Instead, they just hang while trying to read file names.
If you need more info, or have any ideas for me to try, please post in the comments, and thanks!
Quote of the day
Quote of the day:The consecration of Gene Robison as bishop of the New Hampshire Diocese of the Episcopal Church is an affront to Christians everywhere. I am just thankful that the church's founder, Henry VIII, and his wife Catherine of Aragon, and his wife Anne Boleyn, and his wife Jane Seymour, and his wife Anne of Cleves, and his wife Katherine Howard, and his wife Catherine Parr are no longer here to suffer through this assault on traditional Christian marriage.

Anti-Bush Posters
Hadn't seen these before: Gore4Dean Design - "Re-Select Bush" Guerrilla Campaign. Print them up, hang them around your hometown. Maybe change a few minds. It's not just money with Dean...
Interesting post on Daily Kos:
Spending in Iowa through Q3:
Edwards: $716K
Gephardt: $358K
Kerry: $350K
Dean: $240K
Spending in NH and MA through Q3 (Candidates spend money on MA TV ads to hit NH):
Kerry: $251K $454K = $705K
Edwards: $536K $0 = $536K
Gephardt: $70K $194K = $264K
Dean: $124K $118K = $242K
First, what the hell has Edwards been spending his money on in Iowa? According to the latest poll, spending twice as much as anyone else has garnered him only 5% and fourth place. Next, this confirms that even though he has the most money, up to now, Dean hasn't been spending like a frontrunner. They're still spending in these states as though they're cash-strapped. And this despite being first to go up on the air in both states months ago. This tells me that not only is the Dean operation the most successful, it's amazingly efficient and disciplined with its resources, and (as we knew) it gets a tremendous amount of effort out of its grassroots supporters.
