Happy Holidays from Tom and Dori!

This is the Season of Love.

xmas.jpg

But at 12:01 AM, December 26, it's back to "Screw you, Charlie."

In the meantime, we wish you the best. Merry Christmas, Happy Hannukah, and good thoughts for whatever other celebrations you have at this time of year. Thanks very much for being with us this year and reading our blog. And thanks to our commenters, a fine, uncommonly perspicacious bunch.

Help fix my alert sound problem

I've spent a ridiculous amount of time and annoyance on this, and I've given up. LazyWeb, please help me!

The problem is that my system sound alerts have stopped working. If something happens that should trigger an alert, there's no sound. Sounds other than system alerts play just fine.

In the hopes that a picture is worth the proverbial thousand words, I've posted a few hopefully useful screenshots over on Flickr. If you have any ideas of things for me to try, or if there's something stupid I'm missing, or if there's more info you need to help, let me know in the comments here.

If you can help me solve this, thanks! It's now solved, and thanks to all who made suggestions and offered ideas.

New Conference, No Women

I'm tired of writing this same damn post over and over again, and I'm perfectly willing to stop writing it if people would just stop provoking it. Yes, it's another new conference where only men have what it takes to be invited to speak: The Ajax Experience 2006.

It's May 10-12 in San Francisco. I could go, but I'll probably stay home instead and work on my Ajax chapters, as they'll be due right around then.

Cookware-palooza

In Want to make some soup?, Matt pointed to a good deal on a Cuisinart Stockpot at Amazon. I checked it out, but I also then noticed some equally good deals on Calphalon cookware. Check this out:

ItemSale PriceList Price
Cuisinart Chef's Classic Anodized 12-Quart Stockpot with Lid$14.99$110
Calphalon Commercial Hard-Anodized 12-Inch Everyday Pan with Lid$29.99$168
Calphalon Commercial Hard-Anodized 2-1/2-Quart Shallow Saucepan with Lid$24.99$119
Calphalon Contemporary Nonstick 12-Inch Covered Omelet Pan$34.99$90
Calphalon Commercial Nonstick 10-Inch Stir-Fry Pan$21.99$80
Total$101.95$567

If those numbers don't look quite right, it's because I also subtracted the current "Save $25 on your order today when you spend $125 on Kitchen & Housewares" deal. End result: over 82% off. Sweet, eh?
