Limbo disappears, angels dancing on heads of pins applaud

As an escaped Catholic, there were many things about the church and its teachings that never made much sense to me. When I realized that taking communion was ritualized cannibalism, that gave me pause. The whole concept of original sin just seemed wrong. And of course, I detest the misogyny in the church's treatment of women and its bigotry towards gays. I was also bemused by the concept of limbo, "the place where centuries of tradition and teaching held that babies who die without baptism went." This idea is just plain silly. It's like Hell's Waiting Room. This is only a Catholic thing; the term doesn't appear in the Bible, and Protestants never subscribed to the idea. Now, some Catholic theologians have decided that limbo doesn't exist.

So that makes me wonder. What now happens to all those babies' souls that have been hanging around in limbo since the 1400's, when some priest dreamed up the concept? Is it Moving Day? Is the Soul Train loading up? Do they now go to Baby Heaven?

Like the priest said to me when I asked such inconvenient questions about things that I now realize were just made up of whole cloth, "It's a mystery." And now that I've made the intellectual journey from Catholicism to agnosticism to atheism, it's even more of a mystery to me why people believe in this stuff.
